Sweeney Todd Collection: Sketch 2

I just finished the second sketch for the collection.

This one is a back view since I have to do one.

I did a Victorian-style riding jean in a brown velvet flocked denim with seat and thigh insets of italian premium leather.

I also did a white stretch cotton t-shirt with beading and ribbon around the neck to simulate a slit throat ( Yes, I know but it's the movie and it's original) , red Swarowski crystals to simulate blood drops and a crushed velvet lettering applique that says " Never Forget"... The front says "Never Forgive" ( This could be a political t-shirt about the present administration after they leave office).

I also designed a black Italian leather tote bag with a heart with a dagger going through it...

It is a stylized tattoo version of the Veve for Erzulie Dantor, the Loa for Love and Revenge and protector of spurned love.

I also gave her Helena Bonham Carter's hair from the movie....

So here are the pictures...

.. me know what you think...

Love the shirt. Love the red detail on the shoes. Love the concept of the pants -- and yet, something about the sketch for them gives me kind of a 'mom jean' vibe.

(Take criticism with appropriate grains of salt of course -- 'straight male' mindset, and all...)

Is it that they are not low rise or that they are skinny jeans or the flocked denim?
I thought that the leather "assless chaps" illusion would completely erraticate any possible ressemblance to mom jeans...LOL
I thought they were pretty edgy...
The shirt is rad... scary but rad.
I amreally digging the purses...
Having trouble with a leather trench and a particular pose..arghhh

Hooray for burning the midnight (or in my case, 5:00 AM) oil!

I think it's that since the jeans are high-rise, the "assless" part of the chap becomes much larger and rounder than usual to preserve the proportion, the result being the impression that she's got a big ol' mom butt.

I do think the concept is rad and it's definitely edgy (and I have a bit of a weakness for chaps), but if it were me and I had time to mess around with it I'd just play around with the proportion of the leather portion a bit. Don't let it stress you out if you've got bigger stuff to work on, though.

Good luck, and looking forward to what you do with the trench!

Hi Milla,
If you're designing for plus sized women, why are your sketch models all overwhelmingly thin?

I understand the jodhpur --I have two pairs I use for riding. But I'm wondering on a plus sized woman, it just seems that the detailing puts almost a target on her rear. But, I will say that jodhpurs are great in that they give a nice clean lines that are tailored rather than the ubiquitous "leggings." Paired with the right shirt, your plus sized ladies can pull it off.

I am drawing the chicks skinny, because my sketching design teacher forces me too.
She penalizes me by deducting points if we draw the models larger the "fashion figure" and she told us that size 18 ( the way I was drawing them before, my size) is NOT fashion!!!" she would give me a D if I did.
So for this collection and class I have to draw skinny chicks.
As soon as I am done with her, I am modifying my croquis to a plus size figure.
Since this Collection is just to please HER and get a good grade ( although like in everything I do I am pouring my soul into it), it's purely fantasy so I am not taking into account how flattering it would be to any particular body type.
More than anything I am focusing on artistry, technique, theme, marketability and cohesion.
Now when I do my stuff for my student collection for garments that I am actually going to construct and show that will be another different business althoughether.

Milla

Big, beautiful women. Yes, I want to see sketches someday of those large women....

I know. Me too.
It's going to take tinkering around withe the proportiions to get a great plus-size croquis that is also stylized ( I kind of like Galliano's version actually) but that is where I am going with it.

Milla
